Body Vote

Typical duration:
5m

Use your whole body to express your opinion — stand tall for strong agreement, crouch for disagreement.

Purpose

Body Vote turns abstract opinions into visible, physical expressions. Instead of raising hands or speaking, participants use their whole body posture to show how strongly they agree or disagree with a statement. It creates an engaging, embodied experience and makes group opinions visible at a glance.

At a glance

  • Group size: 6–60
  • Duration: 5 minutes
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Facilitation style: Facilitator-led, whole group
  • Setting: In-person only

How to run

  1. Explain the scale: Standing tall with arms up = strongly agree. Crouching low = strongly disagree. Everything in between is a spectrum.
  2. Read a statement: "I feel well-prepared for today's session."
  3. Everyone takes a position on the body scale simultaneously.
  4. Scan the room. Comment on the distribution.
  5. Run 3–5 statements.

Materials needed

Pitfalls & common mistakes

  • Unclear scale: Demonstrate the extremes clearly before starting.
  • Statements too bland: Make statements provocative enough to generate a range of body positions.
  • Not commenting on what you see: The facilitator's observation is what makes this valuable.
  • Forcing people to explain: The body position IS the vote. Only ask for elaboration if someone wants to share.

Inclusion & accessibility

  • For seated participants, use arm height instead of body height.
  • Ensure the exercise doesn't feel physically demanding.
  • Not suitable for virtual settings.
  • The physical nature of this exercise can feel liberating for people tired of verbal check-ins.

Variations

  • Spectrum line: Stand on a line from "strongly agree" to "strongly disagree."
  • Freeze frame: Take the body vote position and hold it as a freeze frame.
  • Sound vote: Add a sound to your body position (loud for strong, quiet for weak).

When NOT to use this

  • In virtual settings.
  • When participants have limited mobility and no seated alternative is prepared.
  • When the statements might be too sensitive for physical exposure of opinion.
