Celebrity Interview

Typical duration:
35m

Purpose

Celebrity Interview replaces traditional presentations with a live, informal interview format that makes expert knowledge accessible and engaging. A host interviews the "celebrity" (a subject-matter expert, leader, or practitioner), and the audience joins in with questions. It transforms passive listening into active, curiosity-driven learning. Use it when an expert has important knowledge to share but a standard presentation would bore or alienate the audience.

At a glance

  • Group size: 10–200+ people
  • Duration: 35 minutes
  • Difficulty: Beginner
  • Facilitation style: Semi-structured
  • Setting: Indoor / Remote-friendly

How to run

  1. Setup (3 min): Arrange two chairs at the front (talk-show style). Introduce the "celebrity" and the host.
  2. Host interview (15 min): The host asks prepared questions that draw out stories, challenges, and insights. Keep it conversational, not formal.
  3. Audience questions (12 min): Open the floor. The host can curate audience questions to ensure diversity and depth.
  4. Closing (5 min): The host summarises key takeaways. The celebrity shares a final thought.

Materials needed

  • Two chairs, ideally on a small stage or in a fishbowl arrangement
  • Microphones (for large groups)
  • Prepared question list for the host
  • Optional: audience question cards

Pitfalls & common mistakes

  • The host asking closed yes/no questions — use open-ended prompts: "Tell us about a time when..."
  • The celebrity reverting to presentation mode — the host should gently interrupt and re-steer toward stories.
  • Not briefing the celebrity beforehand — share the question themes (not exact questions) so they can prepare stories.

Inclusion & accessibility

  • The informal format makes expert knowledge accessible to all, regardless of technical background.
  • Allow written question submission (cards or digital) for people uncomfortable speaking in front of large groups.
  • Provide sign language or captioning for large events.

Variations

  • Panel Celebrity Interview: Interview 2–3 experts simultaneously for contrasting perspectives.
  • Reverse Celebrity Interview: The audience member becomes the celebrity for 5 minutes, sharing their own experience.
  • Remote Celebrity Interview: Conduct via video call with live chat for audience questions.

When NOT to use this

Avoid Celebrity Interview when the content requires structured, sequential teaching (e.g., a technical tutorial) or when the "celebrity" is uncomfortable with spontaneous questions.
