Conversation Cafe

Typical duration:
35m

Purpose

Conversation Cafe creates a safe space for open, honest dialogue on topics that matter but often go undiscussed. Using simple agreements (speak from experience, listen to understand, suspend judgement), it enables groups to explore messy, contentious, or emotionally charged subjects without falling into debate. Use it when a group needs to talk about something difficult but is avoiding it.

At a glance

  • Group size: 5–8 per table, scalable to many tables
  • Duration: 35 minutes
  • Difficulty: Beginner
  • Facilitation style: Semi-structured
  • Setting: Indoor / Remote-friendly

How to run

  1. Set the stage (3 min): Present the topic and the four agreements: speak from personal experience, listen without planning your response, suspend certainty, welcome diverse perspectives.
  2. Round 1 — Opening (8 min): Each person shares their initial response to the topic, uninterrupted (1–2 min each).
  3. Round 2 — Dialogue (12 min): Open conversation. Participants build on what was said, explore tensions, and share new thoughts.
  4. Round 3 — Closing (8 min): Each person shares a final reflection — what shifted, what remains, what they are taking away.
  5. Cross-table harvest (4 min, optional): If multiple tables, one person from each shares a theme with the whole room.

Materials needed

  • Small tables (4–8 seats)
  • Talking object (optional — a stone or pen for rounds 1 and 3)
  • Printed agreements on each table
  • Timer

Pitfalls & common mistakes

  • Letting debate creep into dialogue — gently redirect with "speak from your experience, not about others'."
  • Skipping the agreements — they are the container that makes the conversation safe.
  • Choosing a topic that is too abstract — the best prompts are concrete and personally relevant.

Inclusion & accessibility

  • The round structure ensures everyone speaks, not just dominant voices.
  • A talking object slows the pace and supports people who need more time to formulate thoughts.
  • Offer the option to pass without explanation.
  • For remote: use breakout rooms and a shared doc for silent contributions.

Variations

  • Silent Conversation Cafe: Replace Round 2 with written dialogue on a shared sheet of paper.
  • Walking Conversation Cafe: Hold the dialogue while walking in pairs, then reconvene.
  • Multi-topic Cafe: Different tables explore different sub-questions, then cross-pollinate.

When NOT to use this

Avoid Conversation Cafe when the group needs a decision rather than exploration, or when power dynamics make honest sharing unsafe (e.g., a performance review topic with managers present).
