Crazy Eight Remix
- Typical duration:
- 25m
A rapid-fire sketching exercise where participants fold a sheet into eight panels and sketch eight distinct ideas in eight minutes, then remix and build on each other’s best concepts.
Purpose
The Crazy Eight Remix takes the classic Crazy 8s exercise and adds a collaborative remix phase. After the individual rapid sketching, participants swap sheets and build on each other’s ideas, creating hybrid concepts that no single person would have imagined. It maximises both individual creativity and collective intelligence.
At a glance
- Group size: 4–12
- Duration: 25 minutes
- Difficulty: Low
- Facilitation style: Timed individual sketching + swap and build
- Setting: Tables with paper and markers
How to run
- Fold paper (1 min): Each person folds an A4 sheet into eight panels.
- Sketch 8 ideas (8 min, 1 min per panel): Timer runs. Sketch one idea per panel. Rough is fine. No talking. Move on when the timer beeps.
- Star your top 2 (1 min): Each person marks their two favourite panels.
- Swap (1 min): Pass your sheet to the person on your left.
- Remix (8 min): Read the received sheet. Pick one starred idea and sketch 2–3 variations or improvements in your own style on a new sheet.
- Share best remixes (6 min): Each person presents their remix in 1 minute. Group discusses which remixes are strongest.
Materials needed
- A4/letter paper (2+ sheets per person)
- Markers or pens
- Timer with clear 1-minute intervals
- Star stickers or markers
Pitfalls & common mistakes
- Spending too long on one panel: One minute per panel is non-negotiable. Enforce it.
- Eight versions of the same idea: Each panel must be genuinely different.
- Ignoring the original during remix: The remix should build on the received idea, not replace it.
- No sharing phase: Without it, the remix value stays hidden.
Inclusion & accessibility
- Words, symbols, and diagrams are as valid as drawings.
- Use a loud and visible timer.
- Allow participants to write instead of sketch if strongly preferred.
Variations
- Double remix: Pass sheets twice, so each idea gets two rounds of remixing.
- Themed Crazy 8s: Each panel must address a different user need or scenario.
- Digital Crazy 8s: Use Figma or Miro with timed frames for remote teams.
When NOT to use this
- When the team needs deep, detailed concept development — use Solution Sketch.
- When fewer than 4 people are present — the remix loses value without variety.
- When the problem has not been framed yet — sketching without a clear question is directionless.
