Download Your Insights

Typical duration:
15m

A rapid individual brain-dump exercise at the start of a synthesis session where each team member captures their top research takeaways before group discussion can bias recall.

Purpose

Download Your Insights ensures that individual observations survive the transition from field research to group synthesis. Before any discussion, each person captures their raw takeaways independently, preventing the loudest voice from setting the narrative and preserving minority insights that might otherwise be lost.

At a glance

  • Group size: 3–12
  • Duration: 15 minutes
  • Difficulty: Low
  • Facilitation style: Silent individual capture followed by brief share
  • Setting: Table with sticky notes; first activity of a synthesis session

How to run

  1. Set the prompt (1 min): Ask: "What are the top 5–10 things you observed, heard, or felt during your research that struck you? Write one per sticky note."
  2. Silent download (8 min): Each person writes their insights. One per note. No filtering, no editing. Include quotes, observations, surprises, tensions, and emotions.
  3. Quick share (6 min): Each person reads their top 3 notes aloud in 1 minute. No discussion yet — just download into the room.

Materials needed

  • Sticky notes (same colour for this exercise)
  • Markers
  • Timer

Pitfalls & common mistakes

  • Skipping straight to group discussion: The individual download must happen first to prevent anchoring.
  • Too few notes: Encourage 5–10 per person. Fewer means premature filtering.
  • Editing during download: This is a brain dump, not polished insights. Raw is better.
  • Long share-outs: 1 minute per person maximum. Save depth for the synthesis phase.

Inclusion & accessibility

  • Silent writing gives equal voice to introverts and non-native speakers.
  • Allow typed notes for participants who find handwriting difficult.
  • Provide large sticky notes and thick markers for visibility.

Variations

  • Photo download: Each person shares 3 photos from their research and narrates them.
  • Audio download: Each person records a 1-minute voice memo instead of writing.
  • Structured download: Use prompts: "One surprise", "One quote", "One tension", "One opportunity."

When NOT to use this

  • When only one person did research — they can simply present.
  • When research was documented in real time and a shared repository already exists.
  • When the session is about ideation, not synthesis — download is a synthesis starter.
