Five-Star Review Retrospective

Purpose

The Five-Star Review Retrospective asks each team member to write a product-style review of the sprint, complete with a star rating (1–5), a review title, and pros/cons. This familiar format lowers the barrier to giving honest feedback and naturally structures observations into positive and negative categories with a quantitative signal.

How to run

1. Each participant writes a review: star rating (1–5), review title, 2–3 pros, 2–3 cons, and a one-sentence verdict (5 minutes).
2. Share reviews round-robin (7 minutes).
3. Aggregate star ratings and display the average. Note the range (3 minutes).
4. Discuss divergent ratings and the most common pros/cons (3 minutes).
5. Agree on 1–2 actions to improve the next sprint's rating (2 minutes).

Pitfalls & common mistakes

• Star inflation — everyone giving 4–5 stars to be polite. Encourage honest ratings.
• Reviews becoming joke reviews without substance.
• Not drilling into the why behind low ratings.

• Allow anonymous reviews for more honest feedback.

Variations

• Would You Recommend? Add a yes/no recommendation question.
• Verified Purchase: only items the person directly experienced count as pros/cons.

When NOT to use this

• When the team needs a deep process analysis rather than a rating-based review.
• When the competitive nature of ratings might create unhealthy dynamics.
