- Typical duration:
- 5m
Purpose
The One Word Retrospective is an ultra-fast check-in where each team member shares a single word that captures their feeling about the sprint or project. It serves as a quick emotional barometer and works well as an opener for a longer retro or as a standalone pulse check when time is extremely limited.
At a glance
- Group size: 3–20 people
- Duration: 5 minutes
- Difficulty: Beginner
- Facilitation style: Structured
- Setting: Both / Remote-friendly
How to run
- Ask each person to think of one word that describes how they feel about the last sprint (30 seconds).
- Go around the room (or chat): each person shares their word without explanation (2 minutes).
- Optional: group similar words and briefly note patterns (2 minutes).
- Use the patterns to set the agenda for a longer discussion or note them as a team health data point.
Materials needed
- Whiteboard or shared document
- Optional: word cloud tool (Mentimeter, Slido)
- Timer
Pitfalls & common mistakes
- Allowing explanations during the first round — keep it to one word only, discuss after.
- Dismissing the exercise as too simple — the constraint forces precision and reveals sentiment.
- Not recording the words for longitudinal tracking.
Inclusion & accessibility
- Allow words in any language — the participant can translate for the group.
- Use a digital word cloud for anonymous submissions if the team is sensitive.
- This exercise is very accessible for non-native speakers due to its minimal language requirement.
Variations
- One Word + One Sentence: after the initial round, each person adds one explanatory sentence.
- Word Cloud: use a digital tool to visualize frequency.
- One Word Check-in/Check-out: use at both the start and end of the retro to track mood shift.
When NOT to use this
- When the team needs a substantive discussion about specific issues.
- As the only retrospective format sprint after sprint — it should complement, not replace deeper reflection.
