Purpose

The Plus/Delta Retrospective is a minimalist feedback format that divides observations into two columns: Plus (what went well) and Delta (what to change). Its simplicity makes it ideal for short iterations, quick debriefs, or teams new to retrospectives. The delta framing avoids blame by focusing on change rather than criticism.

How to run

1. Draw two columns: Plus (+) and Delta (Δ).
2. Silent writing: participants note positives and things to change (3 minutes).
3. Share and place notes column by column (5 minutes).
4. Briefly discuss the top Delta items (4 minutes).
5. Agree on 1–2 concrete changes for the next iteration (3 minutes).

Pitfalls & common mistakes

• Treating Delta as a complaint box — redirect to constructive change proposals.
• Overloading Plus to avoid uncomfortable conversations.
• Not converting Deltas into trackable action items.

Inclusion & accessibility

• Explain what delta means (change, not criticism) for participants unfamiliar with the term.
• Allow asynchronous contributions before the live session.
• Keep language simple for multilingual teams.

Variations

• Plus / Delta / Idea: add a third column for creative suggestions.
• Quantified Plus/Delta: rate each item by impact (high/medium/low).
• Rotating Plus/Delta: use after every meeting as a standing agenda item.

When NOT to use this

• When the team needs a deeper, multi-dimensional reflection — use Four Ls or Starfish.
• When emotions are running high and need to be explicitly surfaced — use Mad Sad Glad.
