Purpose

The Retro Wedding is a creative, celebratory retrospective format that frames the sprint as a wedding ceremony. It includes sections like vows (commitments to each other), best moments (highlights), something old/new/borrowed/blue (traditions, innovations, borrowed ideas, and regrets), and the toast (appreciation). It is ideal for milestone celebrations, team anniversaries, or injecting fun into a stale retro routine.

At a glance

  • Group size: 4–15 people
  • Duration: 30 minutes
  • Difficulty: Intermediate
  • Facilitation style: Open
  • Setting: Both / Remote-friendly

How to run

  1. Set the scene: announce the wedding of the team and the sprint.
  2. Something Old: what traditions or practices served us well? (3 minutes).
  3. Something New: what did we try for the first time? (3 minutes).
  4. Something Borrowed: what good idea did we adopt from another team? (3 minutes).
  5. Something Blue: what made us sad or what do we regret? (3 minutes).
  6. Vows: each person makes one commitment for the next sprint (5 minutes).
  7. The Toast: each person shares one appreciation (5 minutes).
  8. Bouquet toss: pick one action to carry into the next sprint (3 minutes).

Materials needed

  • Decorated board or digital template with wedding theme
  • Sticky notes
  • Markers
  • Timer
  • Optional: festive decorations, music

Pitfalls & common mistakes

  • The fun overshadowing substance — ensure each section produces concrete insights.
  • Something Blue being avoided to maintain the festive mood — it is important for balance.
  • Vows being too vague — push for specific, measurable commitments.

Inclusion & accessibility

  • Be sensitive to participants who may have complicated feelings about weddings.
  • Frame it as a lighthearted metaphor, not a literal celebration.
  • Allow written vows for those who prefer not to speak publicly.

Variations

  • Retro Birthday: replace wedding with a birthday party (wishes, cake = highlights, candles blown out = things to let go).
  • Renewal of Vows: revisit previous commitments and renew or update them.
  • Destination Wedding: add a destination (sprint goal) and plan the journey.

When NOT to use this

  • When the team is dealing with serious conflict or crisis — the festive tone will feel inappropriate.
  • When team members are uncomfortable with creative or theatrical formats.
