Shake It Off
- Typical duration:
- 5m
Shake each limb counting down from 8 to 1 — a burst of physical energy to wake up the room.
Purpose
Shake It Off is a fast, silly, physical energiser that requires zero setup and gets blood flowing instantly. Participants shake their right hand eight times (counting aloud), then left hand, right foot, left foot — then repeat counting down from seven, six, five... all the way to one. The accelerating pace creates unavoidable laughter.

Pitfalls & common mistakes
- Starting too fast: Begin at a moderate pace and let the speed increase naturally.
- Skipping the counting aloud: Counting together is what builds the group energy.
- Going below 4: By the time you hit 3-2-1, the pace is frantic and hilarious. Don't skip those rounds.
- Not modelling enthusiasm: The facilitator must go all in.
Inclusion & accessibility
- Seated participants can shake arms only.
- No language barrier — counting is universal.
- Keep it brief to avoid fatigue.
- Not suitable for virtual settings.
Variations
- Start from 10: For a longer version.
- Add sounds: Replace counting with funny sounds.
- Partner version: Face a partner and mirror their movements.
When NOT to use this
- In virtual settings.
- When participants have physical limitations and no seated alternative is offered.
- Immediately before a quiet, reflective activity — the energy level will be too high.
