Short-Post Retrospective

Purpose

The Short-Post Retrospective asks each team member to summarize the sprint in a tweet-length message (280 characters or fewer). The character limit forces concise, impactful statements that reveal what each person considers most important. It is quick, engaging, and works well as either a warm-up or a lightweight standalone retro.

How to run

1. Each participant writes a tweet summarizing the sprint in 280 characters or fewer (3 minutes).
2. Share tweets round-robin (5 minutes).
3. Group tweets by sentiment or theme (3 minutes).
4. Discuss emerging patterns and agree on actions (4 minutes).

Materials needed

• Index cards or sticky notes
• Markers
• Timer
• Optional: a shared digital document

Pitfalls & common mistakes

• Tweets being too generic — encourage specifics.
• Not following up with action items after the sharing.
• Confusing the exercise with a social media activity — keep it professional and reflective.

Inclusion & accessibility

• The short format is inclusive for non-native speakers.
• Allow written submission for those uncomfortable speaking.
• Encourage hashtags as a fun way to tag themes.

Variations

• Thread Retro: each person writes a 3-tweet thread for more depth.
• Reply Retro: after posting tweets, team members reply to each other's tweets.
• Trending Topics: use the tweets to identify trending hashtags and discuss the top 3.

When NOT to use this

• When the team needs a detailed, structured retrospective.
• When the sprint had complex events that need more than 280 characters to address.
