Silent Lineup

Purpose

Silent Lineup challenges participants to organise themselves in a specific order without speaking. Whether sorting by birthday, shoe size, or years in the industry, the exercise builds non-verbal communication skills, collaboration, and creative problem-solving. It also reveals interesting facts about the group.

How to run

1. Announce the sorting criterion: "Line up in order of your birthday, January 1st on this side, December 31st on that side. No talking."
2. Step back and let the group self-organise using gestures, pointing, and miming.
3. Once they believe they are in order, go down the line and have each person state their birthday (or the relevant data point).
4. Celebrate correct sequences and laugh at the close calls.

Pitfalls & common mistakes

• Criterion too complex: "Distance from home" works; "number of countries visited" is hard to mime.
• Someone speaks: Gently remind them — no words, no numbers held up on phones.
• No reveal: Always verify the order at the end — that's where the "aha" moments happen.
• Not enough space: Ensure there's room for a long line.

Inclusion & accessibility

• Wheelchair users can participate in the line normally.
• For hearing-impaired participants, this exercise is naturally inclusive since it's non-verbal.
• Choose criteria that do not require disclosing sensitive information.
• Not suitable for virtual settings.

Variations

• Blindfolded lineup: Even harder — adds tactile communication.
• Multiple criteria: Sort by birthday first, then re-sort by name alphabetically.
• Team race: Split into two groups and race to sort correctly first.

When NOT to use this

• In virtual settings.
• When the sorting criterion might reveal uncomfortable information (salary, age in sensitive contexts).
• In very small groups (under 6) where it becomes trivial.
