Purpose

The Speed Dating Retrospective pairs team members for short, focused one-on-one conversations that rotate every few minutes. It ensures every person talks to multiple teammates, surfacing perspectives that get lost in large group discussions. It is especially effective for larger teams where not everyone gets airtime in traditional retros.

At a glance

  • Group size: 6–20 people
  • Duration: 20 minutes
  • Difficulty: Beginner
  • Facilitation style: Structured
  • Setting: Both / Remote-friendly (breakout rooms)

How to run

  1. Prepare 2–3 discussion questions (e.g., what went well, what frustrated you, one idea for improvement).
  2. Pair up participants. Set a timer for 3 minutes per round.
  3. Each pair discusses the questions. When the timer rings, rotate partners (12–15 minutes for 4–5 rounds).
  4. Reconvene as a group. Each person shares the most interesting insight they heard (5 minutes).
  5. Collect themes and agree on actions.

Materials needed

  • Timer
  • Discussion questions on a visible board
  • Optional: breakout room tool for remote teams
  • Notepads for participants

Pitfalls & common mistakes

  • Rounds being too long — 3 minutes creates urgency and focus.
  • Not having clear questions — without prompts, pairs default to small talk.
  • Skipping the group debrief — the harvest phase is where themes emerge.

Inclusion & accessibility

  • Pair rotation ensures quiet people get equal conversation time.
  • For remote teams, use automatic breakout room rotation tools.
  • Allow participants to take notes so they do not lose insights between rounds.

Variations

  • Expert Speed Dating: pair team members with people from other teams for cross-pollination.
  • Topic Speed Dating: each round has a different question.
  • Speed Dating + Gallery Walk: pairs post their top insight on a wall, then the group reviews all.

When NOT to use this

  • When the group is very small (under 6) — a regular roundtable discussion works better.
  • When the team needs to discuss one topic in depth rather than covering breadth.
