20×20 Image Talk

Purpose

The 20×20 Image Talk is a fast-paced presentation format that forces speakers to distil their message into 20 slides shown for exactly 20 seconds each — 6 minutes and 40 seconds total. The strict constraint eliminates rambling, boosts energy, and levels the playing field between confident and shy presenters.

How to run

1. Brief presenters (before the session). Each presenter prepares exactly 20 slides. Slides auto-advance every 20 seconds — no exceptions.
2. Set the stage (2 min). Explain the format to the audience. Set expectation: this is fast, fun, and focused.
3. Presentations (6:40 each). Start the auto-advance timer. The presenter speaks over the slides without pausing or going back.
4. Quick Q&A (2 min per presenter). Allow two or three audience questions after each talk.
5. Wrap-up (2 min). Highlight common themes or standout ideas.

Materials needed

• Presentation software with auto-advance capability (PowerPoint, Google Slides, Keynote)
• Projector or screen share
• Timer (built into slides or separate)

Pitfalls & common mistakes

• Text-heavy slides. Encourage images and single words — the speaker provides the narrative.
• Not rehearsing. The auto-advance is unforgiving; presenters must practise timing.
• Too many presenters. Cap at 5–6 in one session to avoid audience fatigue.

Inclusion & accessibility

• Share slide decks in advance for participants who need more processing time.
• Provide captions or a live transcription service for hearing-impaired attendees.
• Allow presenters to use notes if memory-only is too stressful.

Variations

• Lightning talks (5 min): Flexible slide count, fixed 5-minute total.
• Ignite talks: 20 slides × 15 seconds (5 minutes total) for even faster pace.
• Team 20×20 talk: A team of 4 each takes 5 slides, creating a relay presentation.

When NOT to use this

• For complex, nuanced topics requiring deep dives and Q&A — the format sacrifices depth for breadth.
• When presenters are uncomfortable with public speaking and have not had preparation time.
